ROCKVILLE, MD, Dec. 9, 2009 -- Imbrium announced today that SorbtiveMEDIA, an oxide-coated, engineered media for dissolved phosphorus capture, has received approval from the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) for use in sandfilters, bioretention cells and other micro-filters throughout the state. This is Imbrium's second approval from the MDE. Three months ago, SorbtiveFILTER, a turn-key stormwater filtration system (using SorbtiveMEDIA) was approved for stand-alone stormwater quality treatment.

These technologies provide stormwater treatment with unprecedented phosphorus removal capabilities -- including dissolved phosphorus, a major cause of the algae blooms and reduced dissolved oxygen that threatens the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Proven Performance
The MDE performed an extensive review of SorbtiveFILTER and SorbtiveMEDIA's performance, including analysis of field and lab testing results, approving SorbtiveMEDIA as an effective and proven tool to help address phosphorus and eutrophication TMDLs, as well as SorbtiveFILTER as a stand-alone device in addition to use in pretreatment, redevelopment and retrofit projects.

Rigorous field testing shows that SorbtiveMEDIA and SorbtiveFILTER captures 89% of sediment, 78% of total phosphorus, and an unprecedented 44% of dissolved phosphorus from stormwater runoff. Both technologies are excellent for addressing the stringent requirements in the current phosphorus-based Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), including the needed phosphorus load reductions to protect the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

Other Key Approvals
SorbtiveFILTER and SorbtiveMEDIA have received other key reviews and approvals, including an in-depth review from the Massachusetts Stormwater Evaluation Project (www.mastep.net) and numerous other approvals in Virginia, where phosphorus is the primary pollutant of concern.
