ONTARIO, Can., June 19, 2002 -- XP Software, a provider of water resource engineering software, recently announced the Regional Municipality of Niagara will use XP Software's XP-SWMM2000 to model the generation of runoff waters, the transport of flows and pollutants through drainage systems, and the movement of dry-weather and wet-weather sewage flows within urban catchments.
Regional municipalities currently face stormwater and wastewater infrastructure upgrades of $50 billion, with an additional $90 billion during the next 20 years. Yet subsidies are expected to cover only a portion of those costs, leaving regional municipalities to determine the most fiscally and environmentally responsible solutions.
The Regional Municipality of Niagara chose XP Software for the Region and 11 of its 12 municipalities after a thorough review and recommendations from consulting firms MacViro Consultants and CH2M Hill. Nearly 10 percent of the licenses for XP-SWMM2000 are held by Canadian entities, including the Region of Halton and the City of Toronto.
"XP-SWMM2000's features will save engineers time when developing models and allow them to effectively address the requirements of the Ministry of the Environment, particularly those regarding combined sewer overflows," said Derek Ali, associate director of water and wastewater for the Regional Municipality of Niagara.
Regional engineers are able to implement XP-SWMM2000 immediately, because users can customize output and input parameters. XP-SWMM2000 will enable those engineers to model complex wastewater and piped and open stormwater systems while simultaneously assessing water-quality impacts on receiving waters - the sole application with this functionality.
