Oct. 2, 2015 -- The Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) has combined resources with the Water Research Foundation (WRF) to continue critical energy research for water and wastewater facilities. Proposals are sought for two new projects to dig deeper into factors affecting energy projects.
"Utilities need new energy management strategies to meet regulations and save on treatment costs," explained Robert Renner, Executive Director of the Water Research Foundation. "These projects will help develop innovative methods for water and wastewater utilities to create clean and efficient energy."
The first project (#4634, "Assess Public Private Partnership Opportunities for Water and Wastewater Energy Projects") seeks to synthesize and collate information about public-private partnership opportunities for energy projects at water and wastewater utilities to highlight the characteristics, challenges, barriers, and risks, along with available incentives and benefits associated with such initiatives. Results of the second project (#4625, "Opportunities and Barriers for Distributed Energy Resource Development at Water and Wastewater Utilities") should help utilities understand the range of opportunities for stand-alone and electric-grid connected distributed energy resource (DER) projects and how legislation, regulations and policies affect the implementation of DER projects, including impacts on financing, permitting and cost.
With regard to project #4625, this includes where legislation, regulations and policies that are meant to support renewable energy generation are not consistent and may create barriers to DER projects. Additional information is available here.
