BRYN MAWR, PA, April 1, 2015 -- Aqua America, one of the largest publicly traded water utilities in the U.S., has announced the promotion of Michael J. Pickel, P.E., to vice president and chief environmental officer for the company.

In this role, Pickel oversees water quality and environmental compliance for all of Aqua's drinking water and wastewater systems in eight states. He also manages the company's in-house water and wastewater laboratory and its water quality services and water resources engineering departments.

Pickel joined Aqua in 2008 and has served in increasingly responsible roles in environmental compliance management. Before joining the company, he worked for 27 years with the City of Philadelphia Water Department in a range of operational, engineering and regulatory compliance positions.

Pickel is an active member of several American Water Works Association (AWWA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advisory groups. He helped develop the Partnership for Safe Water program, a cooperative effort between the AWWA, EPA, Association of State Drinking Water Administrators, National Association of Water Companies, and Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies.

"Mike's strong technical skills and broad experience in environmental policy make him an effective steward of our drinking water and wastewater systems -- both for our customers and the environment," said Aqua's Chairman and CEO Nicholas DeBenedictis. "His insights and expertise will continue to be invaluable to Aqua and the communities we serve."

Pickel is a licensed professional engineer and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the Pennsylvania State University.
