Canada: Trojan Technologies Inc. will deliver a US$ 10.9 million ultraviolet wastewater disinfection system to the Valley Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant near Birmingham, Alabama, USA, in 2004. The contract calls for the delivery of eight Trojan UV4000Plusä units that can treat up to 2.3 million m3 of wastewater a day. The construction schedule for the plant is still being finalised.
The treatment plant is undergoing a major expansion so that it has the capacity to treat large increases in water flow during storm events. The US consulting engineering firm of F.W. Dougherty and Associates of Birmingham, Alabama, is responsible for the overall project design.
Canada: USFilter's John Meunier Products installed a turnkey water treatment plant expansion for the city of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Québec, which started up in April 2003. The US$ 800,000 project increased plant capacity from 12,000 m3/d to 19,000 m3/d. "By bidding this project as general contractor, we helped the city eliminate the number of intermediaries during project execution, said Georges Germa, project manager of USFilter's John Meunier Products, which "helped drive down costs and meet a tight construction schedule."
The project includes an Actiflo® ballasted clarification process with a capacity of 12,000 m3/d for pretreatment and four Dusenflo® filter cells for final treatment. Germa noted that the Actiflo reduces treatment costs, increases capacity within the footprint of a decommissioned clarifier, and effectively treats the city's variable-quality raw water from La Riviére des Outaouais.
Puerto Rico: Ondeo Degremont Inc. won a US$ 6.78m-contract to design and furnish a High Temperature Fluid Bed (HTFB) system at the Puerto Nuevo wastewater treatment plant in San Juan. The HTFB system will replace two multiple hearth incinerators used for biosolids disposal when it becomes operational in 2004.
Ondeo Degremont will also install the HTFB system for the Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority wastewater treatment plant in the US state of Michigan to replace its aging multiple hearth incinerator. Ypsilanti is expanding its capacity from 29 mgd to 46 mgd. The HTFP system will allow the authority to use available space while reducing odours and environmental emissions. Ondeo Degremont Inc., based in Richmond, Virginia, is a US subsidiary of the French company Ondeo Degremont.
USA: The US company Membrana, located in Charlotte, North Carolina, supplied Liqui-Cel® Membrane Contactors to an electronics company in South Korea to remove dissolved oxygen in the high purity water system from saturation to less than 10 ppb. The contactors will operate in combo mode where a small amount of nitrogen and vacuum will be used.
Contactors offer a modular compact solution for dissolved gas control. They were delivered to the original equipment manufacturer that began system fabrication in March 2003. The contactors are part of an overall water treatment system, which is scheduled to start up in the third quarter of 2003.
