The Bulgarian government awarded a technical advisory contract to the UK consultancy Mott MacDonald to help develop a new wastewater treatment plant and related sewerage infrastructure in Haskovo, Bulgaria, as part of a European Investment Bank (EIB)-funded initiative.
Haskovo, a city of 80,000 residents that is located in south-central Bulgaria, discharges untreated wastewater into the Haskovska River because it does not have a functioning wastewater treatment plant.
The project is expected to reduce the pollution load on the Maritza River and its tributaries, and ultimately improve the water quality of the Aegean Sea. Specifically, the project will help the city comply with European directives related to effluent standards and sludge disposal and treatment. Construction of the €18 million-project will be completed by 2006.
Mott MacDonald is providing technical assistance in reviewing and approving the contractor’s design. The consultant will also be administrating and supervising the works contract and providing technical and supervisory support during the operation period of the wastewater treatment project.
