Suppliers of water and wastewater treatment products and services, including filtration, will achieve global sales of US$ 183 billion in 2010, up from US$ 122 billion in 2004, according to the McIlvaine Company report "Water, Wastewater and Filtration: World Markets."
McIlvaine notes that the biggest gains will be in outsourcing industrial and municipal treatment systems. Operating costs of treatment systems is now US$ 172 billion, but this figure will climb to US$ 242 in 2010. The outsourcing sector is expected to grow more than 10% per year, but the supplier share of operating revenues will increase from 26% to 26% by 2010.
Chemical sales will grow from US$ 15 billion now to US$ 21 billion in 2010. System and product sales in this segment will climb from US$ 70 billion to US% 99 billion in 2010.
The report explains recent trends in the worldwide water and wastewater industry, in regards to the major players. Industrial outsourcers, such as GE and Siemens, are combining equipment and product companies, while municipal outsourcers, such as Veolia, are divesting themselves from these supplier companies. For example, Veolia sold USFilter to Siemens this year, making the German giant well positioned to supply outsourcing services in the industrial sector. Veolia was the world's largest operator of municipal water and wastewater plants and the largest supplier of filtration equipment.
Flow control companies are acquiring companies in the treatment market. The global valve and pump market is more than US$60 billion, much smaller than the water and wastewater treatment market. The largest pump supplier, ITT, has acquired filtration companies and is now able to participate in a much larger market, including flow control and treatment) worth US$ 180 billion per year.
McIlvaine foresees double-digit growth rates for membrane treatment and instrumentation, and contends that developments in smart sensors, advanced process control engines and other software will fuel further growth in the outsourcing market.
