China: One of the largest water and wastewater treatment facilities in Asia, the US$ 33-million Nanhei plant, will handle up to 3,500 m3/hour of raw water and 500 m3/hour of effluent to support the Nanhei Petrochemicals complex upon completion in 2005. The facility is located approximately 80 km northeast of Hong Kong, along the Daya Bay in China's Huizhou Municipality of Guangdong Province.
According to the engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) contractor, MWH, the treatment works will include raw water treatment capabilities, advanced ultrafiltration, and demineralisation capabilities in addition to a control discharge basin, effluent treatment plant and pump station. By June 2004, approximately 62% of construction was completed, including all civil and structural works.
Most of the expected average of 3,300 m3/hour of raw water used by the plant for cooling water make-up and boiler feedwater will be reclaimed and recycled, so that the plant requires only a 350-m3/hour (average flow) effluent treatment plant. Commissioning of the raw water facility begins in August 2004 with progressive completion of all commissioning works scheduled for 1 November 2004.
Malaysia: Salcon Bhd subsidiary Salcon Water (HK) Ltd formed a joint venture in China to supply potable water to Linyi City, the most populous municipality in Shandong province, for 30 years.
Salcon Water signed a tripartite agreement for a 40% stake in the joint venture with Jin Ying Group of China, which will take up a 50% interest, and Linyi Municipality Water Supply Company, which will have the remaining 10%. The project calls for the design and construction of a water treatment plant producing 300 million litres of water per day (mld). This will be developed in phases at an estimated total cost of US$ 158 million.
Salcon Water, other than as a joint venture partner, would undertake a contract to design and construct the water treatment plant worth US$ 53 million in addition to operating and maintaining the plant for 30 years. This agreement marks Salcon Water's second project in Shandong. In May this year, it signed a separate agreement with Linyi Municipality Water Supply Company to undertake the supply of potable water for the Lanshan, Hedong and Luozhuang districts of Linyi City, which entails upgrading the existing water treatment plant from 80 mld to 200 mld.
Pakistan: The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) on 28 June signed the US$ 237-million Mangla raising contract with CWE Joint Venture, led by a Chinese company, for main works of the project.
The lowest bidder, CWE Joint Venture, includes Descon Engineer, Inter construct, Gammon Pakistan and Sachal Engineering Works. The major components of the project includes raising of the dam and main spillway head works besides constructing a control weir upstream of the emergency spillway. Once completed in 2007, the project will increase average annual water availability for irrigation by 2.88 million acre feet. Power generation of the dam would also go up by 12 per cent after the project is completed.
