Paques Environmental Technology Shanghai, a subsidiary of Paques BV, will design and build its largest anaerobic water purification plant for Jilin Ji’an New Energy Group Co., Ltd., a Chinese company that produces butyl alcohol, acetone and ethanol for the chemical and pharmacy industry.
The wastewater treatment plant will release biogas, equal to the natural gas demand of a city with approximately 100,000 inhabitants. The anaerobic installation consists of four BIOPAQ® IC reactors of 12.5-meters-diameter and 28-meter-height, will treat 24.000 m3 of wastewater per day, containing 360.000 kg organic waste (COD).
The growing interest for sustainable energy solutions worldwide has recently been underlined by the energy proposals of the European Committee. The far-reaching development of so-called low carbon technologies is part of these proposals.
Paques develops and supplies water and gas purification systems using innovative biotechnology. These systems offer industries and municipalities added value, such as: the re-use of water, the generation of sustainable energy and the reclamation of valuable substances from wastewater.
Veolia Water wins 21st contract in China
The French water company Veolia Water won its 21st contract in China for a 30-year concession with the Lanzhou Water Supply Company in the capital of the Gansu Province on the banks of the Yellow River. Lanzhou is a growing economic region with 3.2 million residents.
The contract was awarded by local authorities through an international tender for the acquisition of 45% of the municipal water company. Veolia Water is expected to generate an estimated cumulated total turnover of 1.6 billion Euros.
The company will manage four water treatment plants with a global capacity of 2,190,000m3 and 640 kilometers of distribution network (960km with connections), of which 50km will have a diameter exceeding 1,000mm, 11 elevation plants, and associated client services. Operations will start in the middle of 2007.
Major sanitation project for Indonesian cities begins
The global engineering Black & Veatch started an assignment on behalf of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to assist the Government of Indonesia with the formulation of an investment loan to improve sanitation services in the country. The project is expected to decrease urban pollution and improve public health.
The company recently completed a similar ADB study for the water supply sector in Indonesia, according to Sri Harianti, representative for Black & Veatch’s water business in Indonesia.
In 2005, Indonesia’s urban population was estimated to be 101 million people, or 48 percent of the country’s total population. By 2025, this is expected to grow to 60 percent, or 160 million people.
The study will prepare city sanitation strategies (CSS) for five large cities and full feasibility studies for up to three of these cities. The CSS will allow communities to choose a sanitation system from an informed menu of suitable systems, subjected to feasibility. Black & Veatch also will prepare implementation support and institutional development programs addressing sector reform, governance and public awareness.
“The development of the project will be based on a highly consultative process that will focus on serving communities in need,” said Justin Searle, Black & Veatch project director for the study. “During the project, we’ll be looking to obtain the inputs of local residents and interest groups to see how they can be involved, how they can benefit from the project, and how we can develop strategies to address their needs,” he added.
Datong Power Plant recovers water, reduces municipal use
The Datong Power Plant now has the largest UF/RO system used for cooling tower blow-down recovery in China since it installed KMS’ Fluid Systems’ reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration technologies.
The coal-fired plant supplies electricity to Beijing, located 160 miles to the east.
The facility’s eight cooling towers circulate 6,300 m3/hr of water. One-seventh of the water is continually blown down to prevent buildup of harmful solids, resulting in a continuous outflow of 900 m3/hr (5.6 MGD). In a different part of the facility, high-pressure boilers for the steam turbines in the electrical generation process consume makeup water at a continual rate of 600 m3/hr.
KMS provided TARGA-10 cartridges since they deliver 60 percent more product water than conventional 8-inch cartridges, which reduced the number of cartridges needed and equipment costs for the Datong plant. UF membranes take the feed of 900 m3/hr from the cooling tower blow-down operation and produce a permeate of 800 m3/hr.
The RO system, in turn, recovers 75 percent of this flow, producing 600 m3/hr of high quality water - completely replacing municipal water as the source for boiler makeup water.

China: Cerno Bioscience is collaborating with Lumiere Technology, an international distributor of advanced laboratory analysis equipment, to distribute Cerno Bioscience’s award-winning MassWorks (MS) mass spectrometry data software in China. The company is headquartered in Beijing with a wide network of offices in key regions, such as Shanghai, Shenyang and Xi’an.
Lumiere Technology has also been representing Thermo Fisher Scientific (formerly Finnigan) MS product lines in China since 200, which has become the largest MS and analytical equipment supplier in China.
MassWorks can improve the mass accuracy of single and triple quadrupole MS systems by up to 100x, significantly improving the ability to identity various compounds, at only a fraction of the investment for high-resolution MS systems.
China: China is expected to be the largest ultrapure water purchaser by 2020, according to the McIlvaine Company’s “Ultrapure Water World Markets” report. Ultrapure water is used for steam generation in power plants, to wash chips in semiconductor plants, and for human injectables in the pharmaceutical industry. The total market for UPW is forecast to rise from US$ 3.5 billion this year to more than $5 billion in 2010.

Singapore: Siemens Water Technologies will invest US$ 32 million over the next five years in a global water research, development, and engineering center in Singapore. Siemens plans to expand its Singapore location into a competence center for water and used water technologies in the Asia-Pacific region.
The new center will employ 60 local and foreign water researchers and professionals. The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOR) with PUB, Singapore’s national water agency to collaborate on water R&D projects.
This industry is a strategic growth area for the country and the government is investing US$ 214 million over the next five years to develop the industry.
Regional: The US Environment Protection Agency, Chinese State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) agreed to collaborate on environmental protection in the Asian region. The agreement will support the development of cap and trade mechanisms, the use of economic and market tools to address environmental issues, and the strengthening of SEPA’s regional infrastructure.
The EPA and ADB currently have technical cooperation programs in China. In 2005, ADB approved US$ 1.5 billion in loans and $18.5 million in technical assistance to China. In December 2003, EPA and SEPA signed a MOU that included annexes on air pollution, water pollution, and pollution from Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and other toxic substances.
