Under the various green building initiatives in the UAE and other countries, the separation and treatment of grey water has become more and more of an issue. As a result, effective technological solutions are being installed.
For example, high-rise buildings, shopping malls and recreational areas are collecting grey water, treating it with compact and reliable membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology using C-MEM and recycling it for irrigation, landscaping, toilet flushing, and similar purposes (Figure 1, below).

One of the benefits is significant overall cost savings, especially as future tariffs for potable water provision and wastewater treatment may be expected to increase throughout the next decade.
C-MEM is a cartridge-based submersed hollow fibre filtration technology, which offers its installation in containers with very small head space.
Figure 2: Single deck C-MEM module
The compactness of the C-MEM module allows for installation of 100 – 150m² of membranes as single deck and 200 – 300m² of membrane area as double deck per m² of footprint, whereby the deck height is only 800mm.
A very wide range of MLSS concentration can be covered between 2 and 20 g/l, which allows engineers to design for optimum cost effectiveness in terms of installed membrane area versus operation costs.
The module assembly, which is based on individual cartridges, allows simple and quick membrane replacement. www.sfcu.at
