GE Boosts Presence in African Water Market

A new agreement will see an AECI subsidiary distribute GE's water and chemical process technologies, monitoring solutions and water and process equipment systems in Africa.

Designed to create greater access to the African market, the memorandum of understanding will cover areas including South Africa, Angola and Kenya.

ImproChem will provide GE's water technologies to its established customer base in the chemical, refining, petrochemical, mining and food and beverage industries.

Bahrain Continues with Wastewater Network Upgrade

As part of the BD2,959,872 million (£2,959,872 approx.) urgent wastewater upgrade across the Kingdom of Bahrain, trenchless lining techniques are being implemented for the upgrade of 2450m sewage pipes with diameters varying from 150-300 millimeters.

The Ministry of Works' Assistant Undersecretary for Sanitary Engineering Khalifa Ebrahim Al Mansoor inspected the sanitary project being implemented on Avenue 820 in Gudaibiya.

This was in the presence of project manager Eng. Pan Najm Al Dein and the technical team supervising the project from the ministry, project consultant EM Consulting and the company in charge of implementation, Frisch & Faust Tiefbau

Oman's IWPP Salalah Desalination Plant Contracts CO₂ System

Pentair Haffmans has been awarded a contract for the supply of a carbon dioxide (CO₂) system for the Salalah Independent Water and Power plant in the Arab state of Oman.

Currently under construction and targeted to begin full commercial operations in the first half of 2012, the Salalah Independent Water and Power plant (IWPP) is a gas-fired power plant with a total net capacity of 445 megawatts and a 15 million gallons per day (69,000 m³/d) Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) plant.

In Salalah, the required CO₂ will be produced on-site by natural gas combustion. During this process released CO₂ will be recovered and converted into food-grade quality by a Pentair Haffmans' CO₂ recovery system.

The US $1 billion IWPP Salalah project is owned by Sembcorp Salalah Power and Water Company, a joint venture between Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries' fully owned subsidiary Sembcorp Utilities and the Oman Investment Corporation.

China takes interest in Oman's MBR Water Reuse Master Plan

Water company Haya Water hosted a delegation from China led by deputy minister of water resources, Lee Joieeing, to share knowledge on Middle Eastern country's proposed Membrane Biorector (MBR) system. The Al Ansab wastewater reuse treatment project will be one of the most complex undertaken in the country to provide treated effluent for irrigation and other purposes across Muscat.

Once complete, the project eventually aims to connect over 80% of Muscat residents directly to the network.

The delegation expressed interest in techniques used by the company to treat and reuse water. A surge in water reuse technologies is expected in China, spurred by requirements for wastewater treatment facilities to become reclamation facilities by 2015.

UAE Desal Project Chooses Energy Recovery Devices

The 45,000 m³/day Al Zawrah seawater reverse-osmosis (SWRO) desalination facility in Ajman, UAE, led by a consortium spearheaded by Spanish firm Cadagua has selected Pressure Exchange (PX) energy-recovery devices manufactured by Energy Recovery inc. Devices were selected further to approval from the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA), which has previously used ERI's technology in other SWRO facilities. Cadagua said it wants to make sure the plant does not experience "unscheduled and expensive breakdowns".
