Dow UF membranes prove popular in range of Chinese projects
To combat turbidity and temperature fluctuation challenges of raw water from the Yellow Sea, HeBei DaTang WangTang International HuaTan Electricity Co. selected Dow Water Solution’s UF SFP-2660 membrane modules to produce feed water for the WangTang power plant in HeBei, China.
Another SFP-2660 module project, the YanShan Petrochemical in the Fangshan district southwest of Beijing installed the UF and FILMTEC™ RO membranes to reclaim petrochemical wastewater high in COD and with trace amounts of oil. The operation can refine 9.5 million tons a year of crude oil and 450,000 tons a year of ethylene — the largest in China. Likewise, the SFP-2660 modules were employed by heat and electricity developer NingBo Jiufen Co-Gen as the sole pretreatment for RO feed water. The site handles generation, installation and repair of electrical services for the NingBo province in China and maintains a steady supply of source water — steam and hot water — from the XiePu River, which is high in TSS with temperature fluctuation and seawater intrusion. ShanXi DaTong Co-gen also chose the DOW UF membranes and a prescreen for its co-generating plant in DaTong, China, to ensure quality RO feed water. Despite challenges posed by high COD, the membranes achieved product water with an SDI of less than 1 and turbidity averaging 0.05 NTU. Results of other efforts above ranged from an SDI of less than 2 to less than 3 and turbidity of 0.2-0.4 NTU. For another Chinese project, DOWEX™ MONOSPHERE™ ion exchange resins 650C and 550A for condensate polishing, along with DOWEX MARATHON™ C, DOWEX MARATHON A and DOWEX MARATHON WBA series for brine cleaning will be installed at Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plant (Phase II), which is being built adjacent to the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant east of Hong Kong in Guangdong Province.
ITT finishes first rural water project in China
ITT Corp. finished two water treatment plants, part of a rural drinking water pilot project, in Qing County and Zhaojiaopu Village, China. Supplying over 10,000 people with potable water, both plants were designed and donated by ITT under an agreement with the China Ministry of Water Resources’s Center for Rural Drinking Water Safety.
With its ITT Watermark partner Mercy Corps, it also helped deliver clean water to over 50,000 people in La Libertad and Meambar, Honduras, which were affected by intense rainfall and flooding this fall. ST1 water treatment units installed in each town produce 1,800 gph of clean water, serving the daily needs for 8,640 people until municipal water is restored.
ITT also won a $4.7 million add-on contract from Electricité de France (EDF) to install its UV technology for treating nuclear plant wastewater in France, doubling existing UV capacity at production unit #1 at the Civaux plant and upgrading the UV installation itself.
Lastly, the company won a contract in A’Seeb, Oman, from project general contractor Hyundai Rotem for a secondary wastewater treatment solution. It includes continuous flow SBR technology, three main pump stations, two treated effluent pump station facilities and an integrated control automation system. The plant, which will be Oman’s largest in capacity, will reuse treated wastewater for landscaping or discharge to the sea in winter months.
Liqui-Cel wins Korean deal at OLED Plant
Membrana GmbH will help degas water at the largest OLED (organic light-emitting diode) plant in South Korea. Bumhan, an OEM in Seoul specializing in new display technology similar to LCD and plasma screens, is building the deoxygenation system with Liqui-Cel® 14x28 and 10x28 membrane contactors. It will process 260 m3/hour of water and will cut DO levels from 8,550 ppb to <2 ppb.
Membrana also just commissioned its first full-scale Aquifer Storage & Recovery deoxygenation trial in Bradenton, Florida, USA, for the city and Southwest Florida Water Management District. Designed to cut DO levels from 8 ppm to <10 ppb at 1 MGD, the system includes 12 Liqui-Cel 14x28 membrane contactors.
GE provides gift of clean water to China’s Dongguang City
GE Water & Process Technologies has donated and transferred operational ownership for two advanced water treatment systems to Dongguang County to provide clean drinking water for over 40,000 residents in Dongguang City. GE next will donate a mobile water treatment plant that will purify water for neighboring villages of Dongguang, supplying clean drinking water to 20,000 more residents.

- GE Water presented an ecomagination award to Orb Electrical Steels, a Newport, South Wales, UK-based unit of the Corus Group, which cut its annual water usage by nearly 276,000 m3 and annual operating costs by £300,000 by recapturing cooling tower blowdown, blending it with rainwater and reusing it for rinsing steel.
- Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF), a joint venture of GE, Toshiba and Hitachi, spearheaded wastewater plant changes that drove down water usage site-wide at its Wilmington, North Carolina, USA headquarters by 25 million gallons a year with a goal of a 20% smaller water footprint by 2012. The new wastewater system avoids nearly 80 tons a year of CO2 emissions with annual savings of $160,000 in water and energy charges.
- Two projects are the result of a research agreement between the Alberta Water Research Institute and GE Water & Process Technologies — a $15 million project focused on technology to improve the treatment and re-use of water in some oil sands operations, and development of a world-class educational program for business executives on advanced water management strategies.
