Veolia Water has signed a €364 million contract with the Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority for financing, design, construction and operation of two new wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) in the cities of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain – the biggest contract to-date for wastewater in the Middle East.
The plants – with treatment capacities of 300,000 m3/day in Abu Dhabi and 130,000 m3/day in Al Ain – will be equipped with Multiflo™ lamellar settling equipment.
In other news, Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies’ RWO GmbH unit secured a large order from Bremen, Germany-based Beluga Shipping for its new CleanBallast water treatment system on 10 heavy-lift cargo ships.
Veolia Water India also was awarded a €24 million contract by the city of Nagpur, in the central Indian state of Maharashtra, for design, build and operation of a new 240,000 m3/day water plant – to be equipped with Multiflo equipment – for 15 years, building on other water production capacity expansion and distribution system refurbishment projects in the area.
Lastly, Veolia signed a contract with Artenius, a subsidiary of chemical company La Seda de Barcelona, for its site at Sines, Portugal, south of Lisbon, to build and operate a utilities plant for production of steam, electricity, demineralized water, industrial gases, and effluent treatment.
The La Seda factory makes a chemical used in production of PET plastic used in beverage and water bottles. Artelia Ambiente SA, a Veolia unit set up to unite the expertise of Veolia Water and Veolia Energy to meet Artenius’s requirements, will be in charge of the facility.
Biwater expands work in Nigeria, Singapore for pumps, boosters
Biwater Nigeria Ltd. signed a procurement and installation contract with the Kwara state’s Ministry of Water Resources for low and high lift pumps at Asa Dam Waterworks in Ilorin, Nigeria.
An add-on to Biwater’s successful efforts in the Ilorin Township Water Supply Scheme and Ilorin Rehabilitation Scheme, the £9.5 million project is to be completed within 18 months.
In other news, the UK water company’s assertion Tanzania broke terms of a bilateral investment treaty was upheld by the World Bank’s arbitration arm, but its $20 million compensation claim was denied regarding collapse of a water privatisation contract in Dar es Salaam in 2005 held by a subsidiary after two years.
Biwater’s AEWT Inc. gave Fluid Equipment Development Co. (FEDCO) a supply contract for interstage boost and energy recovery equipment at Singapore’s Changi NEWater RO water purification project.
The LP-HEMI™ 2001/3 units for each of the 10 RO trains supplied by AEWT to generate and regulate pressure boost between the two stages will save the plant up to 470 kW.
Toray membranes drive recycling efforts in UAE, Singapore
Toray Industries Inc. supplied polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) submerged membrane modules used in MBRs to a sewage recycling plant in Al Ain in the eastern part of the emirate of Abu Dhabi. Constructed by METITO, a UAE-based water treatment engineering company, the 15,000 m3/day (three units of 5,000 m3/day ) system is designed to purify sewage at sewer network pumping stations using MBR with processed water supplied to the surrounding region for irrigation. It’s expected to start up operations later this year.
In addition to this project, Toray won orders to supply submerged membrane modules for MBRs to be used in two other sewage plants in UAE with processing capacities of 38,000 m3/day and 45,000 m3/day. The company is scheduled to supply the membranes within this fiscal year.
In other news, Toray won an order to supply low fouling RO membrane elements for Singapore’s 228,000 m3/day Changi NEWater plant, a large-scale wastewater recycling plant that’s the fifth and largest such facility built by PUB Singapore. Expected to begin operations in phases from 2009 to 2010, Toray will supply the membranes in two batches in 2008 and 2009.
CH2M Hill to manage Abu Dhabi sewage project
Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Co. (ADSSC) appointed CH2M Hill as program manager for a US$1.09 billion sewerage network, the Strategic Tunnel Enhancement Program (STEP). The USA-based engineering and construction firm will oversee delivery of a 40-km gravity tunnel from the northern part of Abu Dhabi Island to the mainland.
Luxembourg firm aids German plastics recycler
Epuramat S.A. won a contract with German plastics recycler Eu-Rec plast GmbH for a wastewater treatment plant at Eu-Rec’s site in Trier, Germany.
The compact plant, which includes Epuramat’s Extrem-Separator (ExSep) liquid-solid separation process and an automatic control system with remote monitoring and alarm signals, will be designed for a flow rate of 60 m³/hour operating 24 hours per day.
Any process water losses will be balanced out by feeding in reclaimed stormwater.

FRANCE: DHV and its consortium partners Demathieu & Bard and Sources have again won a €12 million design-build contract for construction of a new sustainable WWTP in Fabrègues, near Montpellier in the south of France. Part of a €375 million regional program started four years ago to preserve and restore the environment, the project is being financed by the Montpellier Metropolitan District Authority, the Rhône Meacute;diterraneacute;e et Corse Water Board and the Heacute;rault Departmental Council.
IRAQ: British Deputy Consul-General Fionna Gibb opened a new water filtration unit to provide daily drinking water for up to 500,000 more people in Basra. The project in Az Zubayr, which cost £1.25 million, was co-funded by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) and UNICEF. It’s one of the final projects of DFID’s £42 million Iraq Infrastructure Services Programme, to be complete by the end of 2008.
SWITZERLAND: 3M will buy Ligacon AG, a Swiss manufacturer and supplier of filtration systems and filter elements for the pharmaceutical, biotech and general industrial markets. As a distributor of 3M’s CUNO products, Ligacon and 3M have had a working relationship for several years.
ITALY: CECA, a subsidiary of ARKEMA Group, won a €4.5 million, three-year contract from the city of Milan for its eco-responsible activated carbon regeneration solution. The high quality water of the Milan Aqueduct (Metropolitana Milanese) treated with activated carbon regenerated by CECA will supply 1.3 million people living in and around Milan until 2011.
JORDAN: Prince Feisal Ibn Al-Hussein of Jordan, who as a chairman of the Royal Water Committee is active in water resource management and alternative water resources, will be the keynote opening session speaker at the inaugural WaterSmart Innovations Conference & Exposition hosted by the Southern Nevada Water Authority and USEPA WaterSense Program in Las Vegas on Oct. 8-10.
ENGLAND: Surging demand from process industries, government regulations on emission control and greater need for resources like water and power will support steady, long-term growth in “World Industrial Valves and Actuators Markets,” reports Frost & Sullivan’s London office. New analysis finds the market earned revenues of $26.69 billion in 2007 and estimates this to reach $49.18 billion in 2014, driven by retrofits as well as interest in plant automation with an emphasis on quarter-turn valve products.
NORWAY: Sandnes Municipality chose ABS for five major pumping stations worth SEK35 million, one of the largest wastewater contracts in Norwegian history. The regional ABS office in Stavanger will deliver the project from design to installation, including concrete pump sumps for 18 ABS dry installed sewage pumps FR, pipe works, automation, emergency power aggregates, valves, control and monitoring equipment.
