Shanks Group has sent the first shipment of waste liquid from its newly opened Total Care Centre to its flagship ATM facility in the Netherlands.
The Total Care Centre, which was opened in October, collects wastewater and sludge from the Rotterdam Europoort, either from docked ships or on-land processing activities. It is located by deep, open water at the Europoort and has its own quay.
On-site waste treatment plant has treatment tanks which are capable of holding approximately 4,000 m³ of waste liquid before it is bulk transferred by ship to ATM for treatment.
Shanks said the first shipment of over 1,000 tonnes of wastewater was transported by a single ship and saved the equivalent to 38 journeys by road.
Once the wastewater arrives at ATM, it is put through a decanter to remove solids and oils. It is then treated in biological treatment tanks in which bacteria cleans the contaminants and produces clean water.
