JOPLIN, MO, Mar. 24, 2011 -- The city of Joplin, MO, has a secured a low-interest $26 million loan from the state's Clean Water State Revolving Fund that will be used to finance upgrades at its two wastewater treatment plants.
Improvements at the Turkey Creek Wastewater Treatment plant include a gravity sludge thickener, a sludge handling building with belt filter presses, sludge pumps, aerobic digester blowers, conveying equipment, aerobic digester aeration and mixing equipment, raw sewage pumps and oxidation ditch mixers.
The Shoal Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant is slated for activated sludge facilities, a sludge handling building with sludge pumps and gravity belt thickener, clarifiers, tertiary filtration, ultraviolet disinfection facilities, aerobic digesters, a gravity sludge thickener and mechanical screens.
The projects, officials say, will not only help protect water quality but also provide economic benefit through the expansion of infrastructure and creation of jobs. It's estimated that more than 500 workers will be employed during construction.
The projects are expected to be completed in 2014.
