WHEATON, IL, Oct. 11, 2011 -- Suffolk County, NY has signed a contract for In-Pipe Technology® Company to provide professional, green sewer collection system services to the 30.5 million gallons per day (MGD) Bergen Point Wastewater Treatment Plant's collection system.
These services will help to control fats, oils and grease (FOG), improve treatment efficiency and reduce energy, chemicals and sludge processing costs at the plant. The one-year contract, projected by In-Pipe Technology to save the County $0.6 million in Year 1 and $1.2 million in each subsequent year, is the result of ongoing evaluation of the company's technology by the County's Department of Public Works staff. Two of the evaluation projects were funded in part by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The Suffolk County Department of Public Works provided in-kind services for both projects.
The aforementioned two projects funded through Collaborative Agreement between NYSERDA, In-Pipe, and Suffolk County were implemented at two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs): one at a domestic Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) WWTP, and one at an industrial park Rotating Biological Contactor WWTP. Various parameters were studied in these projects including the reduction in the amount of Total Nitrogen discharged to the groundwater, the reduction in electrical energy consumption at the SBR plant, and the reduction in the biosolids (sludge) produced by the plants.
In-Pipe will be paid as a percent of achieved and documented savings and projects a net savings to the County in Year 2 and beyond of over $1.2 Million annually. The award of this contract was pursuant to a request for a proposal, and ultimately ratified unanimously by the Suffolk County Legislature and approved by the County Executive.

In-Pipe's patented technology includes regularly adding a high concentration formulation of facultative, naturally-occurring, non-pathogenic bacteria to strategic locations throughout the sewer system in accordance with an engineered plan. This entails zero capital cost and no additional energy requirement. Performance in the collection system provides increased capacity within the plant, forestalls costly upgrades, and extends the life of the existing infrastructure.
