• Oregon wastewater treatment plant first in the U.S. to recycle nutrients into 'green' commercial fertilizer
VANCOUVER, BC, Canada, June 8, 2009 -- Taking place this week is the official unveiling and media tour of the opening of the first commercial facility in the United States to incorporate new technology that recovers phosphorus and other nutrients from wastewater and recycles them into environmentally-safe premium-quality commercial fertilizer.
The facility was realized under a public/private partnership jointly owned and operated by Clean Water Services, a water resource management utility serving more than 500,000 customers in urban Washington County west of Portland, and Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia.
The plant provides environmental and financial benefits to Clean Water Services and its ratepayers by increasing plant capacity, reducing maintenance costs and generating revenue from environmentally friendly fertilizer, brand name Crystal Green. Crystal Green is the world's first renewable and environmentally-safe fertilizer.

The Durham Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility cleans more than 20 million gallons a day of flow from the cities of Beaverton, Tigard, Sherwood, Tualatin, Durham and King City, and portions of Clackamas and Multnomah Counties. In 2005, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency named the Durham Facility the best operated and maintained advanced wastewater treatment plant in the nation.
Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies Inc., founded in 2005, is a Vancouver-based company commercializing proprietary technologies that recover resources from wastewater and recycle them into valuable products.
