PORTLAND, OR, JULY 11, 2017 -- Officials are warning the public to stay away from two Southwest Portland creeks after about 27,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the waters.
The Oregonian/OregonLive reports the sewage spilled into Woods Creek on Sunday. Woods Creek feeds into Fanno Creek. Both creeks were closed to the public for at least 48 hours.
Maintenance crews were able to divert the flow of sewage into a nearby sewage line, but estimated that at least 27,000 gallons had already been spilled into the creeks. The Portland Bureau of Environmental Services said in a news release it is investigating the cause of the spill and working on repairs.
