The City of Calgary’s Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) has installed the largest Advanced Grit Management® system ever supplied by Hydro International to remove large amounts of grit as an essential contribution to operating efficiency.
A complete new headworks facility was needed to treat incoming wastewater and protect downstream processes from grit abrasion and deposition. Hydro supplied a grit removal solution that could be built in the limited available space and cope with the unique characteristics of the influent at Bonnybrook, including wide seasonal variations in flow.
In all, 10 HeadCell® units, 10 SlurryCup™ grit classifiers and five Grit Snail® dewatering units will treat a peak flow rate of 368 MGD. The system is guaranteed to remove 95 percent of all grit 150 microns and larger at peak flow, and 95 percent of all grit 75 microns and larger, at an average flow of 110 MGD.
Senior Project Engineer Zorica Knezevic, City of Calgary Water Resources, said, “High-performance grit removal is important for lower operation and maintenance costs and retaining the specified capacity of downstream process units. After commissioning, the Bonnybrook grit removal plant continues to perform well.”
