Canada: ADI International Inc. of Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Aqueous Solutions of Melbourne, Australia, signed a license agreement that gives Aqueous Solutions an exclusive license to promote and use ADI's Media G2® arsenic removal systems and Sulfa-Bind(tm) gas scrubbing technology in Australia.
Media G2 is a patented filter media used to remove arsenic from drinking water. Sulfa-Bind is a new patented adsorption technology that removes hydrogen sulphide from gas and contaminated air streams. This technology has been used on gas containing 3% to 12% sulphide.
Canada: The City of Windsor, Ontario, selected Trojan Technologies Inc. to supply ultraviolet (UV) wastewater treatment equipment valued between US$ 2.4 million and US$ 3.3 million, depending on the final project design.
Windsor is upgrading and expanding the Lou Romano water reclamation plant, which discharges into the Detroit River. The city is adding secondary treatment capability to produce cleaner effluent, and replacing chlorination with UV disinfection. The expansion will double its average daily wastewater flow of 48 million gallons per day to 96 million gallons per day. Trojan Technologies is based in London, Ontario.
USA: The French company Veolia Environnement agreed to sell its Culligan business to the private equity firm Clayton Dubilier & Rice for US$ 610 million by the fourth quarter of 2004. The sale represents the final step in Veolia Environnement's strategy to refocus its water operations in North America, originally announced in September 2003. The company is focusing its development on outsourcing services and long-term contracts for municipalities and industrial companies.
USA: Liqui-Cel membrane degasifiers from Membrana, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, will be installed at a G6 Thin Film Transistor (TFT) plant in Taiwan. The manufactured TFTs will be used in monitors and flat panel displays for portable computers and for television displays. Liqui-Cel contactors will be installed to remove dissolved oxygen in the high purity water make-up system. Dissolved gases left in the water can cause defects on the TFT surface.
The system is 1,696 m3/hr and will use Liqui-Cel 14 x 28 membrane contactors to remove dissolved oxygen from saturation to less than 500 ppb. The contactors are capable of removing dissolved oxygen to 1 ppb.
The contactors are part of a water treatment system, which is scheduled to start up in the fourth quarter of 2004.
USA: The new President of the American Water Works Association (AWWA), Kathryn L. McCain, succeeded outgoing-President Marlay Price on 16 June 2004 at the 2004 Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE) in Orlando, Florida, USA. McCain is the first woman to hold the top office of the AWWA.
An active member since 1985, McCain served two terms as an AWWA vice-president while serving as the Texas section director. AWWA membership reached an all-time high of 57,647. Its 4,700 utility members serve 80% of the US population.
