Europe helps fund €164m wastewater expansion programme in Egypt

The European Union (EU) will contribute €32m towards the €164m Kafr El Sheikh Wastewater Expansion Programme in Egypt.

The project supports the construction of new wastewater treatment plants and full wastewater collection networks covering 500,000 inhabitants in the Kafr El Sheikh Governorate.

The local partner for the project will be the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater (HCWW), with the Kafr El Sheikh Water Supply and Sanitation Company (KSWSSC) as a direct beneficiary.

At the end of last month Egypt’s Ministry of Finance increased available funding to help the country recover from a storm water crisis (read article).

The remaining funding for the Kafr El Sheikh project will be covered by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Aims of the project include to improve the quality of irrigation water in the governorate and the environmental quality of the Nile, Lake Burullus, and the Mediterranean Sea at large.

Ambassador James Moran, head of an EU Delegation to Egypt, said: "The project seeks to improve the quality of life of hundreds of thousands Egyptians and is a remarkable example of how local and international partners can join forces and resources."

Up to 37,000 jobs are expected to be created during its planning and construction phase and 1,400 permanent jobs for the operation of the new infrastructure once established.
