The award acknowledges innovative energy-related products, services or business models with the potential to greatly impact energy business. The criteria for winning entries included "originality, applicability, practicality, and overall impact across the energy industry." As such, WWW met the criteria with its implementation of the first DEMON® sidestream DEamMONification system in North America, installed at the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) in Virginia Beach, Va.

DEMON® is a patented biological process to treat ammonia in wastewater that harnesses the ability of anaerobic ammonia oxidizing bacteria -- anammox -- to treat ammonia anaerobically. This means water is treated with a 60-percent reduction in the amount of oxygen used and a 100-percent reduction the requirement for use of an external carbon source.

Within the last ten years, the DEMON® system has been employed at over 40 treatment plants around the world and has helped these businesses achieve both energy positivity and substantial cost savings. "The potential of taking this technology to mainstream treatment, a step beyond sidestream, could drastically change the way we clean wastewater and extremely reduce the resources and costs associated with this enormous responsibility of providing clean water to the U.S. population," said Andrea Nifong, DEMON technology leader at World Water Works.
