A start-up thermal desalination technology that uses advanced thermodynamics and waste heat streams will be introduced across Asia and Africa by Metito.

The water management company is set to invest into clean-tech start up Thermal Purification Technologies (TPTec) in a move to introduce and develop its Low Temperature Distillation (LTD) solution.

As part of the agreement, Metito will exclusively introduce and help develop LTD in markets across Asia and Africa.

TPTec uses advanced thermodynamics and waste heat stream(s) to produce pure water. LTD is said to be capable of treating “even high saline and/or polluted water in an efficient and robust manner”, according to Metito.

The thermal process is based on the principle of low temperature distillation and can be retrofitted to existing plants.

Thermal desalination processes (Multi-Stage Flash and Multi-Effect Distillation) have been a mainstay of potable water production in regions such as the Middle East.

Although thermal processes have been viewed as more robust, the decreasing cost of membranes has meant that seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) processes have been slowly accepted. Yet, outside of the Middle East, an ongoing discussion is whether reverse osmosis (RO) processes will eventually fully replace the thermal alternative.

Metito said the process is “very tolerant of salinity and is not limited to treating seawater, but also polluted water, brine from other desalination plants and various industrial wastewaters, including produced water from oil and gas exploration and mining which ordinarily can be problematic to deal with”.
