FAIRFIELD, CA, May 16, 2014 -- The prestigious 2013 California Water Environment Association's (CWEA) award has been given to the Fairfield Suisun Sewer District for having the state's best wastewater collection system of its size (0 to 249 miles). The District was selected by a committee of the 2012 CWEA collection system award winners.

The CWEA awards program honors exceptional wastewater agencies in areas that include compliance, maintenance, operating procedures, and training programs.

"This award recognizes the high level of reliability and outstanding quality of the District's wastewater collection system," says Marcie Bodeaux, Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District Senior Environmental Engineer. "We are committed to excellence in facility operation and exceptional value for our ratepayers."

The District's major accomplishments for 2013:

  • Completed the Central-Suisun Forcemain Equalization project to provide capacity for projected growth over the next 10 years through piping modifications, and effectively delay the construction of expensive pump station infrastructure.
  • Replaced aging electrical equipment with modern equipment at Central Pump Station, greatly improving pump station safety and reliability.

The District has undertaken an unprecedented effort to develop comprehensive sewer pump station contingency plans, including bypass plans, traffic control plans, and critical diversion or overflow elevation locations.
