• Digital automation solution key part of larger shovel-ready stimulus project to renovate and expand the facility, helping to preserve a wildlife habitat and recreational area

PITTSBURGH, PA, Nov. 10, 2009 -- Emerson Process Management announced today it has been selected to install its PlantWeb® digital plant architecture with Ovation® expert control system at the Johnsonburg Wastewater Treatment Facility. The facility is operated by the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority, located within Elk County, Pa.

Installation of the Ovation system is part of a larger project funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to modernize the facility and expand its capacity by a factor of four. Quadrupling the facility's wet weather permitted flow capacity will help preserve the Clarion River and surrounding area -- a popular wildlife habitat and recreation spot situated roughly 120 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

The entire upgrade project is scheduled to be completed and the expanded plant facilities fully operational by summer 2010. Emerson's ability to complete the automation and controls project within the designated timeframe and without disruption of ongoing plant activities were important factors in the company's selection by G.M. McCrossin Inc., general contractor for the overall project.

The automation project calls for Emerson's Ovation solution to monitor and control all major processes at the facility's raw sewage pump station, pre-treatment building, equalization tank, aeration basins, clarifiers, aerobic digesters, chlorine contact tank and yard pump station.

Emerson's comprehensive digital automation and control solution also includes AMS™ Suite predictive maintenance software and numerous Emerson field devices. These devices include Rosemount® 3051 smart pressure transmitters and 3095 differential pressure transmitters; Daniel® Venturi flowmeters; Mobrey® ultrasonic level sensors; and Rosemount Analytical pH/ORP and dissolved oxygen sensors and analyzers, among others. With the capability to support fully integrated digital bus-based technologies, Ovation will provide Johnsonburg plant operators with valuable insight into the operation of the intelligent HART devices installed at the facility. With this insight, operators will be able to identify and troubleshoot potential problems before they impact plant operations.

Security is always an important consideration for municipalities. With that in mind, Emerson is providing Johnsonburg with solutions related to cyber security, including anti-virus services and remote viewing capabilities that enable designated personnel to observe plant processes offsite. Emerson is also involved in Johnsonburg's physical security efforts, supplying video surveillance and intrusion detection equipment that will be used to monitor activities at the raw sewage pump station building.

"Maintaining the beauty and pristine condition of this area has always been our chief priority, and the stimulus funds we received to expand our facilities will help ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy the Clarion River and surrounding area," said Hudnell Caldwell, chairman, Johnsonburg Municipal Authority. "Emerson's digital automation technology is an important piece to the puzzle, as it provides our operators with the wealth of information they need to operate our facilities safely, reliably and efficiently."

"We have a proven track record helping municipalities of all sizes manage the challenge of additional capacity requirements," said Bob Yeager, president of the Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson. "We are pleased to be involved in this expansion project, which is necessary for safeguarding public health and the environment in Elk County."
