SAN YSIDRO, CA, Dec. 15, 2010 -- The International Boundary & Water Commission (IBWC) has reached a five-year agreement with Veolia Water North America (Veolia Water) to continue operations that address sanitation needs on the Tijuana/San Diego border.

Valued at approximately $35.5 million, the contract includes managing, operating and maintaining the existing wastewater treatment plant located in San Ysidro, as well as the startup and then long-term operation of a secondary treatment expansion unit. The San Ysidro facility is a 25 million-gallons-per day (MGD) advanced primary wastewater treatment plant, including five surface runoff canyon collection systems and two pump stations.

The renewal of the contract continues Veolia Water's status as the only contractor of record at the San Ysidro facility. The partnership between the IBWC and Veolia Water has spanned the full operational life of the advanced primary treatment system operations, which began in 1996.

"The International Wastewater Treatment Plant is a unique solution to a multinational environmental issue," said Rich Perna, project manager, Veolia Water North America. "We're pleased to continue as a partner for this contract to ensure the continued safe and cost-effective operation of this wastewater system."

The U.S. Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC), headed by Commissioner Edward Drusina, is a federal government agency and is the U.S. component of the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC), which applies the boundary and water treaties of the U.S. and Mexico and settles differences that may arise in their application.
