Measuring Instruments for Wastewater

The multi N/C 2100S by Analytik Jena provides reliable TOC/TNb analysis in wastewater.

The determination of the sum parameters TOC (Total Organic Carbon) and TNb (Total Bound Nitrogen) is a routine application in wastewater monitoring. Robustness, cost efficiency, a high degree of flexibility, and ease of use are the most important requirements placed upon the measuring instruments used in this field — due to a generally high sample throughput.

With the multi N/C 2100S, Analytik Jena offers a reliable, easy to use, and cost-efficient solution for municipal wastewater monitoring. The system handles difficult samples and requires minimal maintenance. Reliable results are ensured by septum-free direct injection technology for carryover-free sample introduction and a high-temperature combustion system for complete sample oxidation. The multi N/C 2100S does not require time-consuming, frequent re-calibration efforts. Operation is secured by an integrated self-monitoring system which warns beforehand in case of errors and even corrects certain issues itself. The system can run for 24 hours unattended.

TOC and TNb in municipal wastewater are to be measured in the untreated inflow, intermediate clean-up steps and the final effluent of a sewage treatment plant. In order to carry out this analysis as accurately and efficiently as possible, it is recommended to use a catalytic high temperature combustion TOC analyzer for simultaneous determination of non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC) and TNb from one single injection. According to many standards, TOC is defined as the sum of dissolved and particle bound organic carbon compounds. Thus, the challenge is to assure a representative sample transfer, including all particles, into the combustion system. There, a complete and simultaneous combustion of both, difficult to be oxidized substances and particle bound organics, has to be guaranteed. This requires an effective sample homogenization on the auto sampler rack and especially a sample introduction technique, which prevents particle loss during sample transfer from vial to furnace and blockages caused by large particles. System down times as well as extended wear and tear on sensitive Teflon parts inside the dosing system have to be avoided.

The multi N/C 2100S ensures complete digestion of the samples due to its adjustable combustion temperature of up to 950° C — irrespective of sample matrix type and particle content. Signal detection is supported by our corrosion-proof and wide-range Focus Radiation Non-Dispersive Infrared Spectroscopy (NDIR) detector, which covers a TOC working range from 0 to 30,000 mg/L without sample dilution. The software supports working with wide concentration ranges by enabling the combination of multiple calibration ranges in one measuring method. The best fitting calibration curve is automatically selected by the analyzer based on the area units of the measurement signal. This ensures the selection of the optimal calibration range for result evaluation. WW
