BSU honored with industry award for water reuse project
The Florida Water Environment Association has named Bonita Springs Utilities Inc. winner of the 2022 David W. York Award for Water Resources, Reuse, and Resiliency Project of the Year Public Education Program. Reuse project awards are given in several categories including reclaimed water quality, water use system, and public education/information.
In 1992, the FWEA established The David W. York Water Reuse Awards to recognize outstanding water reuse projects in Florida. Projects are evaluated by members of FWEA’s Water Reuse Committee based on environmental quality management, water reuse system, and public education/information. The public education/information aspect of the award consists of community and public education tools; new customer education programs which inform customers about nutrient content of the reclaimed water and reduced need for fertilization, and the ongoing notification program for existing customers.
“This award reflects the dedication and performance of the BSU staff,” said Jon R. Jenkins, BSU executive director. “Our Operations Director Andy Koebel and Lead Operators Jake Hepokoski and Cody Karth work hard to maintain and operate BSU’s water reclamation facilities and conduct tours to educate the public on the importance of wastewater reuse in our overall conservation efforts.”
As part of ongoing member outreach, BSU keeps members informed on any major changes to the utility, provides resources and information on conservation efforts via its website, monthly flyers included in members’ bills, social media and other communication channels.
BSU’s Water Reclamation Facilities treat approximately 5 million gallons of wastewater per day. Wastewater effluent is used to irrigate golf courses and resident lawns in our community. Using reclaimed water is a state objective for conserving freshwater supplies and preserving the water quality of rivers, streams, lakes and aquifers. In addition to reclaimed water, biosolids are produced through the treatment process which are suitable for use as fertilizer.
Bonita Springs Utilities Inc. is a not-for-profit water and wastewater utility cooperative founded by local citizens in 1970. The member-owned utility provides service in the City of Bonita Springs, the Village of Estero and unincorporated South Lee County. The utility is recognized as an industry leader with awards from the American Water Works Association, Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Florida Water Environment Association.
