Intelligent Water Systems Challenge launches for third year

Feb. 25, 2020
Scenarios will focus on collection systems, wastewater and drinking water treatment systems, source water/watersheds, and distribution networks.

ALEXANDRIA, VA, FEB 25, 2020 -- The Intelligent Water Systems Challenge (IWS Challenge) is back for a third year to drive participants to use innovation and data to solve some of the most difficult issues facing water utilities.

The overarching goal is to demonstrate the value of intelligent water systems to utilities and foster adoption of smart water technologies. Participating students, professionals, and technology experts have the opportunity to showcase their innovative talents, with a focus on leveraging data to help utilities make better decisions.

The IWS Challenge will run from January 15 to October 5, 2020. Scenarios will focus on collection systems, wastewater and drinking water treatment systems, source water/watersheds, and distribution networks. Teams with innovative solutions will be invited to present their results in person at WEFTEC 2020 in New Orleans for final judging. The winning team will receive a cash award of $10,000.

The IWS Challenge is hosted by the Leaders Innovation Forum for Technology (LIFT), a joint effort by The Water Research Foundation (WRF) and the Water Environment Federation, and is also supported by the American Water Works Association, BlueTech Research, Cleveland Water Alliance, IEEE Smart Cities TAC, Imagine H2O, International Society of Automation, and the Smart Water Networks Forum.

"Accelerating innovative technology is crucial as we continue to search for ways to address challenges water utilities are facing. LIFT is a valuable resource to support innovation and we are excited to see the new and inventive solutions that this year’s IWS Challenge will bring," said WRF's CEO Peter Grevatt.

The deadline for team registration is March 20, 2020.
