Prequalification entries have been opened for three desalination projects by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP).

A report from OPWP’s tender committee showed that a total of 10 groups submitted prequalification documents, with Asian companies providing more than half the entries:

- Abengoa (Spain), Seven Seas Water Corporation (US), Modern Channel Services

- GS Inima (South Korea/Spain)

- Hyflux (Singapore)

- Sembcorp (Singapore)

- Marubeni (Japan)

- JGC (Japan)

- Sojitz Corporation (Japan)

- ACWA Power (Saudi Arabia), Veolia Middle East (France), Dhofar International Development & Investment Holding (local)

- Tedagua (Spain)

- Degremont (Suez) (France).

To be located in Salalah (100,000 m3/day), Sharqiya (80,000 m3/day) and Duqm (60,000 m3/day), the desalination projects are part of a wider plant to meet increased water demand in the country, expected to rise by more than 6% per year until 2020.

It was towards the end of last year when the 150,000 m3/day Sohar 1 desalination plant in Oman faced technical problems, with commentators suggesting this could impact bids on new projects (read WWi story).
