July 8, 2002 -- National Academies has a new web site with information on many categories of homeland defense, designed to inform the 'first responders' in American communities.

America's first line of defense in any terrorist attack is the "first responder" community -- local police, firefighters and emergency medical professionals, according to the U.S. Office of Homeland Security.

A new National Academies web site for first responders features information on bioterrorism and public safety, with a search engine for more than 3,000 related Web pages.
