Temetra is Itron's next-generation mobile meter data collection and management solution. With full Itron Mobile integration, Temetra provides customers with a complete, cutting-edge mobile data collection package in the cloud. All data is securely stored on servers that meet the ISO 27001 information security standard.
Currently, 24 million meters are hosted by Temetra all around the world, including the UK’s largest utility, Thames Water, which supplies 2 million liters of water to its service area weekly. Now North American water utilities can use the cloud-based solution to access and modify meter data and assignments from anywhere with a simple web login, gaining insights into key assets remotely.
“Historically, Itron's FCS and MV-RS [products] enabled utilities to [achieve] that basic fundamental use case of just gathering read information so they can accurately bill customers,” said Brian Tucker, Itron product manager. “[Those solutions] allow them to import files from their billing system that indicate which meters need to be read and then it allowed them to dispatch that work out in an intelligent way. [This gave utilities multiple] ways to split and optimize the routes to try and get some operational efficiency gains.”
Now with Temetra, utilities can make their data go further. Temetra will store a utility’s data, graph that data and even calculate average and median flows and intelligently calculate high/low values. Temetra can also help utilities optimize service routes to decrease the time workers spend on the road.
“We think Temetra is going to bring huge, huge value to these customers by saying, ‘Look, we have all of this data. If you have Itron ERTs and you're doing advanced AMR, [with Temetra] you can obtain and use daily or even hourly reads for all of these data points.’"
Utilities will still be able to view their historical usage, just in greater detail.
“[We can now help] customers do things like proactive meter changeouts, monitoring for theft, monitoring for leaks, [and more]. With Temetra, utilities can take that information, identify those accounts with probable leaks, and within that same application, they can take action on that now by creating work orders in the system, and dispatch the information to someone working in the field in real-time.”
Today, Temetra supports Itron’s 60W, 100W, 100W+, and 500W ERTs. In 2020, the company plans to add services for gas metering and advanced data logging support for both water and gas utilities.
“Through [partners like] Cisco, we'll be able to integrate other data sources, such as data coming from an AMI network. That will give customers the flexibility to integrate hourly interval data, daily interval data and leak sensor information into the system,” Tucker said.
“[Next year] we're going to [expand] support for importing read data from other sources, such as our ChoiceConnect fixed network and our industrial IoT AMI networks. [We'll be able to pull in information from multiple sources, allowing end customers to view it in Temetra, so they'll have a single window to view all of that data.]”
According to Tucker, a solution like Temetra can be a step toward a utility’s migration to full automation.
“Even with a full AMI network deployment, you have areas that are just traditionally hard to read," he said. "With an AMR solution today, we can use Temetra to identify the meters that need to be checked, and even create a route now that you can send out for someone to go and collect those reads. Ultimately, with Temetra, the utility gains the benefit of optimized read collection as well as access to advanced functionality with a simple, easy to use solution that will help reduce operational costs.”
