WASHINGTON, DC, APRIL 22, 2020 -- George Hawkins, the former chief executive officer for DC Water and national leader and speaker in the clean and safe water sector, has launched Moonshot Missions, a non-profit organization devoted to helping utilities in underserved communities. During his tenure at DC Water, Mr. Hawkins achieved his own "moonshot”, transforming DC Water into a world class, innovative, customer-oriented powerhouse. “A person's zip code should not determine the quality of the water they drink or the services they receive," said Hawkins, the Founder and President of Moonshot Missions. “We don’t take “no” for an answer, we find solutions. People deserve to have clean water and clean waterways, no matter where they live - Moonshot Missions will help make that happen.”
As infrastructure ages and funds become scarce, delivering safe drinking water and protecting local waterways is increasingly expensive and challenging. Unfortunately, the communities in greatest need are the most challenged as they struggle to maintain essential services. Moonshot Missions assists water utilities in underserved communities identify and adopt field-tested solutions that improve operational performance, reduce costs and/or even generate new revenue streams. In addition, Moonshot Missions will help better-resourced utilities to independently identify and customize solutions to optimize operations, reduce costs and target capital expenditures. Hawkins has assembled a talented team of professionals with experience from public utilities, regulatory bodies, non-profits and the private sector. The team, among others, includes Andy Kricun, Moonshot Missions’ Managing Director, who previously served as executive director and chief engineer of the Camden County (NJ) Municipal Utilities Authority as well as Sarah Neiderer, Moonshot Missions’ Senior Director of Utility Assessments, who previously oversaw DC Water’s strategic planning and lead-in-water programs.
