QUEENSLAND, Australia – The Cairns Regional Council and Gympie Regional Council have adopted smart water technologies and software to reduce water losses and improve network efficiency.

Gympie Regional Council in South East Queensland has adopted Israeli company TaKaDu’s integrated event management solution to improve efficiency and reduce water loss.

Covering an area of 6,898 sq kms, Gympie is implementing TaKaDu as part of a major restructuring project to make its water network smarter, which includes investing in automation and new devices, and the setting up of additional DMAs (district metered areas).

The utility selected TaKaDu after evaluating how the technology is being used at other utilities in the region, including Unitywater, Queensland Urban Utilities (QUU) and Gold Coast.

Amir Peleg, TaKaDu’s founder & CEO, said: “Having TaKaDu at an early stage helps utilities to implement a more efficient and accurate system for improving performance. The network can be better monitored, managed and controlled at every stage, with the processes already in place to cover different types of events and incidents. Customer service is also improved through quicker response times and a faster resolution of events.”

Meanwhile, the Cairns Regional Council (CRC) in Australia’s Far North Queensland has entered into an agreement with Itron to modernise its water distribution network with the OpenWay Riva IoT solution.

Using the Itron solution, CRC will allow its customers to access water use data to better manage how they are using water and quickly detect leaks. In addition, with smart ultrasonic water meters, the council will have access to information that supports the production of high-quality water and reduction of wastage.

OpenWay Riva will allow CRC to use a single network for smart metering, water efficiency and system integrity applications. With the collection and analysis of more detailed meter data over the network, CRC can measure water consumption more accurately and detect leaks faster.

Councillor Bob Manning, mayor of the Cairns Regional Council, said: “Water is our most valuable resource and the council is committed to reducing wastage at every point of delivery. Itron has the global experience and technology to help us meet this goal. We look forward to benefiting from Itron’s OpenWay Riva IoT solution, which will give us the foundation to better manage our water resources and make a positive step toward our longer-term water security.”
