WYNDHAM — The Wyndham Community Board is keen to look at new ideas for discharging sewage.
Southland District Council asset management group manager Dave Adamson was in the United States in October where he attended several seminars on dealing with wastewater. The board heard a summary by Mr Adamson at its monthly meeting this week.
Board chairman Digger Eunson said Mr Adamson had raised several ideas that the board would like to look at, particularly setting up a land-based sewerage system opposed to discharging sewage into the river.
"We have been operating without a (resource) consent for a while. We are not happy about this but we have no idea what to offer for a solution," Mr Eunson said.
The cost of a new system was "scary." Board members agreed to find out more about a land-based system.
Other items in brief from the meeting: POSTPONED: The board postponed demolition of three former shops in Balaclava Street, to make way for a new town square, until February when the work will be retendered. The board received only one tender, which was not from a contractor in the area.
DECLINED: A request by the New Zealand Fire Service to get new steps at the Wyndham Hall was declined. The Fire Service used the hall once a year for its awards ceremony. Mr Eunson said the main problem was having nowhere to store the steps.
