WASHINGTON, DC, Apr. 1, 2011 -- The City of Houston has deployed a 4G municipal network from Alvarion as part of its Smart City project.

The wireless broadband network will enable the city's local government to offer advanced municipal services, including connecting Houston's mobile AMR system to the WiMAX network to remotely monitor 500,000 water meter accounts, improving customer service and reducing costs.

The network will also expand connectivity service to facilities and operations for SCADA, video surveillance, and more.

"We realized the most cost-effective way to introduce a city-wide network was to go with a high-performance wireless solution that offers huge savings on infrastructure expenses and can be easily and remotely managed to reduce operational costs. This way, we can gradually roll out advanced residential services, such as water utility management, in a way that would genuinely improve residential life in the city, without necessarily raising the cost of living," said Brian Anderson, Senior Consultant and Program Director, City of Houston Wireless Broadband Initiative.

The City of Houston's Smart City project aims to improve urban life with advanced communications infrastructure. With the new network, Houston expects to improve traffic safety and congestion, reduce annual costs for T1 connections, and provide free Internet service for underprivileged communities.
