HERSHEY, PA, June 2, 2008 -- American Water announced that its subsidiary, Pennsylvania American Water, has acquired the water utility assets serving the Mountain Top Estates community in Monroe County. The purchase price is approximately $240,000.
The newly acquired system provides drinking water to approximately 180 people in this residential development in Middle Smithfield Township. Pennsylvania American Water already provides water and wastewater services in a number of nearby Monroe County communities and neighboring Lehman and Delaware townships in Pike County.
Across northeast Pennsylvania, the company provides water and wastewater service to more than 500,000 people in the cities of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre and portions of Luzerne, Lackawanna, Pike, Monroe, Wayne, Susquehanna, Northampton, Columbia, Northumberland, and Schuylkill counties.
"We view this acquisition as a great fit for Pennsylvania American Water, because our network of experts and resources across northeast Pennsylvania ensures that we're able to meet the community's water needs," said Kathy Pape, president, Pennsylvania American Water.
Under terms of the purchase agreement approved by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, no immediate changes will occur in the Mountain Top Estates customers' water rates.
Pennsylvania American Water is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and/or wastewater services to more than 2.1 million people.
