Utilities can now backhaul data from meters and other utility-operated devices over a VPN through a new secure and standards-based solution from Aclara.

ST. LOUIS, MO, Feb. 4, 2014 -- Water and wastewater utilities can now better backhaul data from meters and other utility-operated devices over a virtual private network (VPN) through a new secure, standards-based, and easy-to-deploy solution from Aclara Technologies LLC.

A provider of intelligent infrastructure technologies to electric, water and gas utilities and part of the Utility Solutions Group of ESCO Technologies Inc. (NYSE:ESE), Aclara's Metrum Cellular™ VPN-based, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solution operates on Verizon's network and enhances AMI deployment planning with a one-stop solution for utilities deploying cellular technologies for advanced metering infrastructure.

The system includes encryption technologies that isolate meter data from other traffic on the public cellular network. Uniquely, Aclara Metrum Cellular also provides pass-through communications to billing, making it compatible with any data-collection standard employed by the utility, including MV-90.

The Metrum Cellular solution will be jointly marketed through the Verizon Partner Program, of which Aclara is a Silver member. Verizon offers the country's largest and most reliable 4G LTE network, and provides world-class disaster preparedness, infrastructure investment, and implementation and support. Utilities purchasing the solution through the Verizon Partner Program have one point of contact for all services and support.

With its ability to bring high-bandwidth, low-latency, IP-based cellular communications directly to utility endpoints such as meters and substation equipment, the Aclara Metrum Cellular AMI simplifies replacement of legacy telephone connections and fill-in for hard-to-reach areas. It is especially effective when deployed in high-value commercial and industrial applications where large amounts of data must be collected in real time.
