AUSTIN, TX, Oct. 15, 2009 -- National environmental engineering and consulting firm Malcolm Pirnie Inc. and its Red Oak Consulting Division have been selected to assist both the City of Austin, TX, Austin Water Utility and the City of Virginia Beach Public Utilities Department with their asset management program implementations. Both projects, significant efforts encompassing water and wastewater infrastructure, are focused on improving efficiency and effectiveness.

According to Charles Schoening, Client Manager for the Austin project, Malcolm Pirnie and Red Oak are uniquely qualified to best deliver this project. "Malcolm Pirnie has been working with AWU for more than 12 years, and our team brings a long history and knowledge of its assets and systems. We have a unique understanding of the Utility's processes and priorities." The project includes developing the program's objectives, performing a comprehensive gap analysis, assessing IT and data systems, conducting an asset condition and criticality assessment, and implementing business processes to validate and prioritize future Capital Improvement Plans (CIP).

Malcolm Pirnie was selected by Virginia Beach to provide asset management and operations support to both its water and sewer systems. The one year contract has four optional yearly renewals with a maximum ceiling of $5M. The project will include ongoing management and strategic support for the Utility Department's asset management program. The initial scope is expected to focus on several strategic initiatives including the implementation of performance measures, capital project business cases and prioritization, and IT systems configuration and integration. Virginia Beach will be expanding its recent focus on the wastewater collection system to now include asset condition assessment of the water distribution system.

"With these two recent projects, Malcolm Pirnie is now leading some of the most comprehensive asset management engagements in the country," explained Asset Management Practice Leader David Sklar. "Leading water and wastewater utilities continue to reinforce asset management as a proven discipline that supports long-term planning, financial sustainability, and fosters greater transparency and trust with stakeholders.
