Submersible pump
A new series of pumps introduced by ITT Flygt feature an innovative hydraulic design that ensures reduced power consumption. The N-Pump series employs an open-type self cleaning impeller. In operation, each leading edge of the impeller passes across a sharp stationary relief groove. This action ensures that rags, stringy materials and solids are sheared, cleaning the impeller. As a result, operating efficiency is improved, translating into lower overall energy consumption.

Vertical turbine pumps
Patterson's vertical turbine pumps employ the latest design concepts to produce an efficient pump that is adaptable to a variety of applications. They can be staged as necessary to meet desired pressure requirements. Minimum floor space is required, and the pumps operate in low NPSHA applications. Standard construction offers cast iron discharge heads from 6 in. to 14 in., with fabricated steel column, stainless steel head and bowl shafts. Open line shaft construction is standard. Bowls 12 in. through 40 in. are offered, providing the capability to handle flows in excess of 30,000 gpm.

Magnetic drives
MagnaDrive has expanded production of its magnetic adjustable speed drives (ASDs) through a partnership with Precision Machine Works of Tacoma, WA. Using powerful, rare-earth magnets, the magnetic ASD can transmit torque from a motor to a load in virtually any large industrial application. The ASD consists of a rotor assembly containing high-energy permanent magnets and a copper conductor assembly. Relative motion between the magnets and copper rings creates a magnetic field that transmits torque across an air gap. Varying the width of the gap changes the coupling force, producing a controlled and infinitely variable output speed. By eliminating hard starts and allowing for precise speed control, many installations can use a smaller motor to run the same loads.

Pumping systems
Flowtronex offers modular pumping systems that feature energy efficient Variable Frequency Drives. These VFD systems use a unique control software, Automatic Power Saver (patent pending), to respond to flow changes and demands by accelerating or decelerating the pump motor without using pressure-regulating valves. Typical energy savings will virtually pay for the system in 18 months, while also reducing leakage and stress on piping networks. The VFD can also be retrofitted to standard pumping systems. FlowNet, a network of certified field technicians in the pumping industry, can service the VFD systems, eliminating concerns regarding maintenance.

High efficiency motors
Baldor Electric Company has announced major improvements to the efficiency ratings and overall performance of its Super-E line of premium efficient motors. The company has raised the efficiency level of over 125 individual ratings and some now exceed 96%. The improved efficiencies meet or exceed the new rebate levels established by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) and followed by most electric utilities. Every Super-E motor is balanced to half of the NEMA allowable vibration level. In addition, the motors are wound with Baldor's exclusive ISRtrademark Inverter Spike Resistant magnet wire, which makes the motors up to 100 times more resistant to transient voltage spikes, high frequencies, and short rise-time pulses commonly produced by inverters.
