Jan. 3, 2001—U.S. Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson today named Dr. Harry Boston as Manager of the Office of River Protection (ORP) in Richland, Washington. Dr. Boston has been Acting Manager of the ORP since August 2, 2000.
The ORP's purpose is to manage the department's largest and most complex environmental cleanup project � Hanford's underground radioactive tank waste.
"Dr. Boston has brought extensive technical experience and focus to the office, and plans to hire new executives and other Federal employees to ensure we have the experience and expertise in place to keep our project on schedule and meet our commitments," said Secretary Richardson.
Dr. Boston is the former Deputy Manager for Site Transition at the department's Richland Operations Office, where he was responsible for a variety of programs and activities to guide the cleanup mission at Hanford.
In addition to his government service, he has more than 14 years of corporate management experience with Lockheed Martin Hanford Corporation in Richland and Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, Inc., at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Site in Tennessee.
Dr. Boston holds a bachelor's degree in natural resources from Cornell University, a master's degree in civil engineering from the University of Washington, and a doctorate in botany from the University of Wisconsin.
The mission of the ORP is to safely store, retrieve, treat, immobilize and dispose of high-level radioactive waste stored in 177 underground tanks at the Hanford site.
