• MWH awarded contract to help Boulder, Colo., assess water system, future needs -- Evaluation plan will help city maintain high water quality and supply levels -- BROOMFIELD, CO, Feb. 14, 2007 -- MWH Global Inc., a leading provider of environmental engineering, construction and strategic consulting services, announced today that it has been awarded a contract by the City of Boulder to help assess the city's existing raw water system and identify future needs and challenges. Under the terms of the contract, MWH will work with the city to develop an evaluation plan that will help it maintain its high water quality and supply levels into the future.
"Continuing to plan for Boulder's water supply and source water delivery infrastructure is critical to our City," said Joe Tadduecci, Utilities Project Manager for the city of Boulder. "We chose MWH to help us with this important plan because of their creative project approach, their key staff's knowledge of city facilities, and their experience performing water master planning studies."
The Source Water Strategic Plan (SWSP) to be completed by MWH will include an overview of the state of the Boulder' raw water collection, storage and distribution system as well as an assessment of the future challenges that the system will confront. MWH will also identify and prioritize strategies for the ongoing protection of the quality and reliability of the city's existing water supplies.
"This plan will help the city avoid potential problems before they occur, while maintaining its track-record of consistently high-quality water supply standards," said Kevin Clark, project manager at MWH.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) most recent Drinking Water Infrastructure Needs Survey and Assessment notes that throughout the country aging water delivery infrastructure will require replacement or significant rehabilitation over the next 20 years. In addition, the report states that over the next 20 years, a $276.8 billion investment in the nation's water systems will be needed in order to continue to provide clean and safe drinking water. The report lists the installation of new infrastructure, as well as the rehabilitation or replacement of deteriorated or undersized infrastructure as areas of particular need.

• Highest level of treatment achieved at all Ocala wastewater facilities -- OCALA, FL, Feb. 14, 2007 -- The city of Ocala has achieved the highest level of treatment standards for all of its wastewater treatment facilities. "This achievement is rare among utilities, and it places Ocala in the forefront of protecting the environment," said City Manager Paul Nugent. The goal at wastewater facilities is to treat the incoming raw sewage to the highest level achievable so it can safely be recycled back into the environment. The city accomplishes this with both its reclaimed water and biosolids. The reclaimed water is treated through filtration and disinfection to meet public access standards and then returned to the environment through spray and drip irrigation systems. The biosolids -- solid material that remains after the treatment process -- are processed through an indirect dryer to "Class AA" standards and used as a soil amendment and supplement for fertilizer. As of this month, all of the city's biosolids are processed at its state-of-the-art wastewater facility, Water Reclamation Facility No. 3. In the past, all biosolids were treated to "Class B", which is a restricted access standard, and then safely returned to the environment through land application on area farms. As rural areas are developed, land application becomes less practical. As a result, biosolids from all three plants are now treated to Class AA and sold to a fertilizer marketer. Ocala has three reclamation facilities that treat an average of 5.63 mgd of wastewater...

• New Wiluna, Australia, wastewater plant opened -- WILUNA, Western Australia, Jan. 31, 2007 -- A new wastewater treatment plant has been opened at Wiluna by Water Resources Minister John Kobelke. The minister said the upgraded treatment system, comprising a pumping main, new pump station, connecting pipeline and an evaporation pond 1.5km out of town, replaced three treatment ponds located in central Wiluna. While Wiluna had been adequately serviced by its septic tank system for wastewater, it was clear the treatment ponds could no longer stay in close proximity to the school and housing. Kobelke said the Water Corporation would take over control of the town's wastewater scheme from the shire. He said there had been considerable help given to the Water Corporation, particularly in the areas of design and procurement, which had fast-tracked the project and the expertise of DM Civil to construct the new scheme...
