Pennsylvania water utility harnesses in-pipe hydropower for clean energy
A Pennsylvania water utility is preparing to turn its raw water intake into a new source of clean energy. St. Mary’s Area Water Authority has selected New York-based Rentricity to install an in-conduit hydropower system on its intake line, using the pressure already present in the pipe to generate electricity.
The project is expected to produce roughly 157,680 kWh of carbon-free power annually—enough to supply 12 homes or remove 13 gasoline cars from the road. It will also mark Rentricity’s lowest-pressure Flow-to-Wire installation to date.
