DENTON, TX, Jan. 20, 2012 -- The existing storm sewer system at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston will be upgraded with the assistance of $2.9 million from FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP).

The drainage upgrade project involves upsizing the existing storm sewer system, maintaining two existing outfalls to Holcombe Boulevard and creating an additional system that will connect to one of the existing outfalls to relieve water pressure.

The reconstruction of the storm sewer and upgrade of the building connections to the existing facilities in the area will provide greater protection and help alleviate flooding conditions within Bates Street.

The federal funds represent about 75% of the cost of the total project, estimated at $3.8 million.

FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant program provides grants to states and tribal and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures that reduce the loss of life and property due to natural disasters and to enable mitigation measures to be implemented during the immediate recovery from a disaster.
