DENVER, CO, March 23, 2015 -- The American Water Works Association (AWWA) recently joined the United Nations and various water advocates throughout the world to celebrate World Water Day 2015, held on Sunday, March 22.

In commemoration of the event, AWWA Chief Executive Officer David LaFrance issued the following statement:

"AWWA joins with the United Nations and the entire water community in celebrating this year's World Water Day. World Water Day is a significant day each year when we mark the benefits of safe, clean and reliable water and the many things it makes possible. The theme for this year's World Water Day is 'Water and Sustainable Development,' which emphasizes the link between water and all areas of our lives in order to be sustainable.

"The water professionals who compose AWWA understand that a safe, clean and dependable water supply plays a critical role in protecting public health, sustaining the environment, suppressing fires, supporting the economy, and assuring our overall quality of life. Because of this, our members take their responsibility in managing, treating, distributing, collecting, and returning water to the environment seriously. They truly are dedicated to water, the world's most important resource.

"In light of World Water Day 2015, AWWA thanks its 50,000 members that work tirelessly to keep water safe, clean and sustainable throughout North America and beyond."
