YORKSHIRE, UK – Utility Yorkshire Water has partnered with Gurney Environmental as part of an upgrade to its Withernsea wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).

Located to the south of Withernsea, the site was last upgraded in 1991 when it was 168 metres away from the cliff edge. Due to significant levels of coastal erosion, the WWTP is now only around 40 metres from the cliff and needs to be relocated.

In addition to a new wastewater works, a new sewer will need to be laid to transfer flows from Withernsea to the new site, and a new sea outfall pipe will also be built next to the existing one.

The development is part of an overall wider £3.8 billion investment programme between 2015-2020.

As part of the Withernesa works, Aero-Fac technology will be supplied by Gurney Environmental, which said “can normally be built for significantly less than typical activated sludge works and can operate at up to 85 percent less OPEX (operational cost)”.

The company said that the process employs an advanced and optimised form of a completely biological aerated facultative treatment process that automatically adjusts to handle extreme variations in flows and loadings.

If planning permission is granted then work is expected to start on the new treatment works in the Spring of 2020 and completed in the Summer of 2021.

Prior to this, the first part of this major project will be to replace the current long-sea outfall pipe, which is in poor condition and at risk of collapse. We hope to install the new outfall this summer and until it’s in place, emergency works have been done to protect the existing outfall using rock bags.

The new sewer is planned to start in the Spring of 2019 and completed in the Summer of 2020..

John Bond, communications advisor at Yorkshire Water, said: “Our existing facility in Hollym, near Withernsea needs to be replaced as it is now only 40 metres from the sea due to rapid coastal erosion in the area. By building a new treatment facility inland, we’re able to look at new, alternative options for treating the town's wastewater, and we feel Gurney Environmental’s experience and track record provide us with the best solution for both ourselves and our customers for the future.”
