Algeria - Canadian company Island Water Technologies has finished installation of a containerised wastewater treatment plant in Hassi Messaoud, Algeria.
The system will treat wastewater from 300 people at a remote work camp and will be monitored remotely by the IWT technical team based in Canada. Following treatment, produced water is suitable for irrigation.
The system replaced an existing wastewater collection system, which relied on two trucks transporting the wastewater to a regional treatment plant.
The company's video of the installation can be seen above.
Island Water Technologies said that the system, which has no moving parts, reduces up to 90% of operational energy costs compared to traditional Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) and Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) systems.
For the first treatment step, wastewater is treated aerobically in a primary treatment tank with “enhanced fixed film material”. A secondary chamber then provides additional filtration and disinfection. Ultraviolet disinfection (UV) is optional.
Dr. Patrick Kiely, CEO, Island Water Technologies, said: "This is a cutting edge wastewater solution that will enable on-site processing of wastewater at remote work camps. By saving up to 90% of the energy and not requiring chemicals we will demonstrate significant potential for reduced environmental impact and saving costs at these remote locations."
