Black & Veatch to help implement environmental project in China

• Multi-sector urban infrastructure will help Nanjing City achieve long-term sustainable growth

NANJING CITY, Jiangsu Province, China, Oct. 31, 2007 -- Black & Veatch, a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company, announced today that it has signed a consultancy contract with Nanjing Municipality for the Nanjing Qinhuai River Environmental Improvement project that will enhance water supplies and provide added protection from flooding. The project is being funded by the Asian Development Bank.

Nanjing City, the capital of Jiangsu Province, is growing rapidly with an urban population of 4.5 million people. Increased economic growth is affecting the environment and the city's infrastructure. Due to this growth, the Qinhuai River, which flows through the city, is becoming increasingly polluted from wastewater discharges. Heavy rainfall, flooding and stagnant water also adversely affect the urban environment and potentially contribute to health and sanitation issues.

Black & Veatch will provide project implementation and capacity building support, as well as give advice on construction management for this project helping to provide infrastructure that will make the community cleaner and safer.

"By improving the quality of surface water systems and upgrading the flood protection levels for the major rivers that flow through the city, it will be possible for the city to experience long-term growth while improving the urban environment for its residents," said James Currie, Regional Director for Black & Veatch Water's Global Development Agency business.

In order to meet the city's objectives, a detailed and thorough project plan is being designed and implemented by Black & Veatch.

"The project has five components," said Yanhua Wang, Director of Client Services for Black & Veatch's water business in China. "We will help Nanjing City strengthen its infrastructure through improvements in river replenishment, flood protection, urban storm water drainage and municipal sludge treatment and disposal."

Black & Veatch's consulting work started in Oct. and will last approximately four years.
