April 2, 2007 -- Infrastructure services company Morgan Est, has been awarded a £31.5 million contract to upgrade Frankley Water Treatment Works (WTW) in Frankley, Birmingham for Severn Trent Water. The Frankley scheme is the largest single project Morgan Est has carried out to date under Severn Trent Water's five year, multi-million pound AMP4 programme of water infrastructure and environmental improvements which started in April 2005.

Frankley Water Treatment Works treats and supplies drinking water, which is piped from the Elan Valley in Wales to Birmingham and the surrounding area, serving industrial users and 1.3 million domestic customers. The two-and-a-half year Frankley WTW improvement scheme will involve building a 3,000 m2 carbon filtration plant, designed to blend 220 mega litres of water daily from Trimperley Pumping Station near Worcester with Elan Valley water during periods of high demand. In addition to the construction of the filtration plant, Morgan Est will be carrying out extensive pipe work and installing mechanical and electrical systems to enable the connection of the new filtered water stream with the existing Frankley treatment facility.

"There are a number of key activities which will challenge the team such as connecting up large 1.1 metre diameter pipes at depths approaching 7metres within a very short shut-down period," explains Andy Small, Morgan Est's operations manager. "This is an exciting and challenging project and its success is dependent on working in collaboration with Severn Trent Water and making good use of the close relationships we have built up during the delivery of this framework."

Frankley is the 16th project Morgan Est has carried out for Severn Trent Water under the AMP4 programme to improve water quality in the Severn Trent Southern Area which covers South Warwickshire, Birmingham, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. Morgan Est has been employed to provide a range of services from construction and process-related civil engineering, to mechanical and electrical installations including both asset renewal and new construction.

The project is due for completion in the summer of 2009.

Morgan Est is a leading provider of infrastructure services operating in the UK tunneling, civil engineering, water, utilities and rail sectors. It is a member of Morgan Sindall plc, the construction group, which has four specialist divisions of fit-out, construction, infrastructure services and affordable housing.
