Chlorine dioxide disinfectionVulcan Performance Chemicals provides chlorine dioxide systems for effluent disinfection. The Rio Linda™ generators combine sodium chlorite with either chlorine gas or sodium hypochlorite in a vacuum-operated mechanism to generate chlorine dioxide on site. Chlorine dioxide will not produce chlorinated by-products. It is faster acting than chlorine and is effective over a wide pH range. The company's representatives offer expert advice on chlorine dioxide chemistry, and can help to design a system for specific applications.Vulcan Performance ChemicalsBirmingham, ALTel: 800-474-4086Web: www.vul.com

Water disinfectionUV disinfection depends on lamp output. Although fluorescent UV lamps have a long life, they will degrade with time and as bulb contamination occurs. Monitoring lamp output with Solar Light Co.'s GLM10, a stable, calibratable UV detector, assures lamp efficacy. The GLM's one-piece design for both readout and detector suits it to operate in a pressurized water environment. Percent of initial lamp intensity is read on an LED. When lamp output drops to 60%, a low-level indicator light turns on and a power relay trips to initiate any other alarm or desired control device. When UV intensity rises above the low-level set point, the alarm indication is automatically removed.Solar Light Co., Inc.Philadelphia, PATel: 215-927-4206Web: www.solar.com

Residual chlorine measurementThe AccuChlor system from GLI International uses an EPA approved amperometric measurement technique to provide free or total chlorine measurements. The unique construction of the measuring cell provides stable and repeatable measurements from extremely low ppm ranges to as high as 50 ppm of free or total chlorine. This system uses ordinary 5% food grade distilled white vinegar for pH adjustment. In addition to being extremely inexpensive, distilled white vinegar prevents fouling by cleaning the sensor's flow cell, and is readily available, non-toxic, and non-hazardous.GLI International, Inc.Milwaukee, WITel: 414-355-3601Web: www.gliint.com

UV systemThe new Ultra Guard® UV System provides disinfection of wastewater effluents at significantly lower costs. A high efficiency, low pressure, ultra-high-intensity UV lamp produces the highest germicidal output on the market. When combined with the patented, modular Single Lamp Reactor (SLR) chamber, which induces turbulence for increased effluent exposure to the UV lamp, the result is maximum disinfection with fewer lamps. Together with automatic dose pacing, this means less power and less maintenance for cost savings.USFilter Wallace & Tiernan Prod.Vineland, NJTel: 856-507-9000Web: www.wallaceandtiernan.usfilter.com

UV disinfectionAquionics offers a UV disinfection system called Aquionics Inline. The system can be designed for disinfection of primary, secondary, and tertiary treated effluents as well as combined sewer overflows and stormwater. The system is compact and simple to install. Series and parallel configurations can be provided to handle any size flow or disinfection permit.Aquionics Inc.Erlanger, KYTel: 800-925-0440UV disinfectionEach Aquaray 40 HO VLS module from ONDEO Degremont houses 40 low-pressure, high-output vertical UV lamps. A staggered lamp array creates a semi-tortuous path so organisms encounter multiple barriers at the most intense point of contact. Flow baffles increase turbulence, which aids disinfection, and the baffles also direct flow away from the walls and into the UV lamp field. Lamp row-by-row flow pacing increases lamp life and conserves energy. An on-board computer electronically monitors individual lamps. Maintenance is minimal.ONDEO Degremont, Inc.Richmond, VATel: 804-756-7600Web: www.ondeo-degremont-usa.comColorimeterPalintest has introduced a new dual-range colorimeter for on-site measurement of chlorine dioxide in water. The Chlordiox Duo instrument is designed for bench use in laboratories and for field use. It measures chlorine dioxide in just one minute and requires no technical knowledge. Chlorine dioxide is measured within a low or high range: 0 - 2.5 ppm or 2.5 - 20 ppm. A reagent tablet is first dissolved in a water sample. After the sample is inserted in the meter, a single button press produces measurements in parts per million displayed on a 0.5 in. LCD screen.Palintest USAErlanger, KYTel: 800-835-9629Web: www.palintestusa.comUV disinfectionThe Trojan UVSwift™ disinfection system for municipal drinking water features a flow-through reactor that was designed to provide a small footprint and low headloss. The system's medium pressure lamps operate at a higher intensity than conventional low-pressure lamps, and it therefore requires fewer lamps to achieve disinfection targets. The system's output can be varied as water quality or flow rates change. It offers lamp cleaning options including simple manual cleaning, an automated mechanical process or an automated physical and chemical cleaning process for more demanding conditions. The system also features an automated monitoring and control system to minimize the need for operator intervention.Trojan Technologies Inc.London, OntarioTel: 519-457-3400Web: www.municipal-water.comTablet chlorinationHammonds has introduced a new tablet water chlorination system. The new off-the-shelf system offers a "plug and play" design that does not require custom engineering. The system uses a magnetic stir bar and motor to create a vortex in a small water chamber. The vortex creates positive and negative pressures allowing for recirculation of the solution, making it possible to vary solution strength without changing flow through the system. The chlorinators use PPG's three-inch calcium hypochlorite tablets to produce a consistent solution that can be injected at controlled rates into the water supply. The system uses 2 gpm of water and just 10 amps of standard 110 vAC.HammondsHouston, TXTel: 800-582-4224UV GuidelinesThe new book "Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidelines for Drinking Water and Water Reuse" is intended to provide guidance to regulatory agencies who review applications for the use of UV disinfection systems for drinking water and water reuse.
